Finding the right breast surgery for your needs can be difficult, especially if you’re uncertain what options are available. If you’re considering a breast lift or breast reduction, there are benefits to combining them. But is it the right option for you? The best way to learn more is by consulting our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Ashley Tregaskiss. In the meantime, here is what to know about this topic and how it can benefit you.

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift is a surgical procedure that lifts the breasts to a higher position on the chest wall when they have begun to sag and stretch. Breast lift surgery creates a more youthful look, getting rid of excess skin and repositioning the remaining breast tissue and nipple. It’s a popular option for women who have undergone pregnancy and experienced drooping and stretching because of nursing.

What is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is a procedure that reduces the size of your breasts. If you have excess breast tissue or fat, it can result in breasts that are large, heavy, and encumbering. A breast reduction procedure removes excess tissue to reduce breast size.

What are the Benefits of Combining Procedures?

Combining procedures comes with a few key benefits. The breast lift on its own doesn’t change the size of the breasts – it simply moves the breast tissue upward and reshapes the breast around it. Because large breasts tend to sag, breast reduction is nearly always combined with a breast lift to some degree. This can help remove excess breast tissue and skin that doesn’t fit the new breast size. The overall result is smaller breasts that are lifted to a perkier, more upright position. This ensures that the nipples point outward and no longer fall below the breast crease.

How Do I Know If I Should Combine Procedures?

If breast shape is not a concern to you and you’re simply bothered by your size, then breast reduction alone can be a good option. In the same way, if you’re more concerned about sagging breasts but like the size they are, then a breast lift will be sufficient. However, if you have large breasts that also sag, a combination procedure is often recommended to get the best result. Additionally, if you have large breasts and simply want them lifted, Dr. Tregaskiss may recommend reducing them to some degree in order to prevent future sagging.

During a consultation, you’ll review the benefits of each procedure and which option will be best for your needs.
