Ear Surgery / Otoplasty Surgeon in Vancouver

Otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure to correct the appearance of ears, whether they are large, protruding or misshapen (such as cauliflower or cupped ears). Depending on the individual circumstances the surgery can reposition the ears closer to the head (sometimes called “pinning”), reduce the size of the ears, correct asymmetry between ears or reshape any deformities in the cartilage to create a more pleasing appearance. After listening to your concerns and hopes, Dr. Tregaskiss will discuss the options and his recommendations with you during your consultation to achieve the best aesthetic outcome.

Otoplasty FAQs

  • 1What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery designed to reshape, reposition, or resize the ears to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. It is commonly performed to correct prominent, asymmetrical, or misshapen ears in both children and adults.

  • 2At what age can otoplasty be performed?

Otoplasty can be performed on children as young as 5 or 6 years old, once their ears have reached full growth. The procedure is also effective for adults, with similar outcomes regardless of age.

  • 3Is otoplasty painful?

Otoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, ensuring the patient does not feel pain during the procedure. Post-operative discomfort is usually mild and can be managed with prescribed pain medications.

  • 4How long is the recovery time for otoplasty?

Recovery from otoplasty generally takes about one to two weeks. During this time, patients should avoid strenuous activities, contact sports, and sleeping on the side to prevent pressure on the ears, which aids in proper healing.

  • 5Are the results of otoplasty permanent?

Yes, the results of otoplasty are usually permanent. Once the ears are reshaped or repositioned, the new appearance remains stable, barring any significant trauma to the area.

  • 6What are the risks associated with otoplasty?

As with any surgical procedure, otoplasty carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, and changes in skin sensation. In rare cases, there may be issues with asymmetry or the need for revision surgery. However, these risks are minimized when the surgery is performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon such as Dr Tregaskiss.

  • 7How is otoplasty performed?

Otoplasty typically involves making an incision behind the ear to access the cartilage. The surgeon then reshapes the cartilage and repositions the ear closer to the head. In some cases, non-removable stitches may be used to maintain the new ear position. The incisions are closed with sutures and usually leave minimal, hidden scars.

  • 8Will I have visible scars after otoplasty?

The incisions for otoplasty are typically made behind the ear, which helps to conceal any scarring. Over time, scars generally fade and become less noticeable. Your surgeon will discuss scar management techniques to ensure the best possible outcome.

  • 9How soon can I return to work or school after otoplasty?

Most patients can return to work or school within one week after otoplasty, depending on their recovery and the nature of their daily activities. However, it’s important to follow your surgeon’s advice regarding activity restrictions to ensure proper healing.

  • 10Can otoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes, otoplasty can be safely combined with other facial cosmetic procedures, such as rhinoplasty or a facelift, depending on the patient’s goals and the surgeon’s recommendations. Combining procedures can be an efficient way to achieve a more comprehensive aesthetic improvement.
