Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kybella and how does it work?

Kybella is the only Health Canada approved injectable treatment specifically designed to reduce submental fat, commonly known as a double chin. Its active ingredient, synthetic deoxycholic acid, mimics a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps break down and absorb dietary fat. When injected under the chin, it destroys fat cells, leading to a noticeable reduction in fullness in that area.

How many Kybella treatments are typically needed?

Most patients require multiple treatment sessions to achieve their desired results. Generally, 2 to 4 sessions are recommended, spaced at least one month apart. The exact number of treatments depends on individual goals and the amount of fat present under the chin.

What can I expect during and after a Kybella treatment?

During the procedure, several small injections are made under the chin, which may cause a brief stinging or burning sensation. Post-treatment, patients often experience swelling, bruising, and redness in the injection area, which typically resolves within a few days. Results can take up to 8 weeks to become fully visible as the body continues to eliminate fat cells.

Are there any side effects associated with Kybella?

Common side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, redness, and temporary numbness at the injection site. More serious but rare side effects can include difficulty swallowing, nerve injury leading to an uneven smile, and tissue necrosis at the injection site. It is important to discuss potential risks with your healthcare provider before treatment.

Who is a suitable candidate for Kybella?

Kybella is intended for adults aged 18 and older who are bothered by moderate to severe fat beneath their chin. Ideal candidates should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the treatment's outcomes. It may not be suitable for individuals with certain conditions such as active infections at the injection site or significant skin laxity

What are the alternatives to Kybella?

Alternatives include neck liposuction+/- facetite radiofrequency skin tightening or a necklift procedure. Both of these options are surgical options, typically performed in an operating room or clinic. Determining which option would be best for you is done in conjunction with a plastic surgeon with experience of all of these modalities. As a rule of thumb, Kybella is best reserved for clients under 40 yrs old with good skin quality.
