Blepharoplasty / Eyelid Surgery in Vancouver

As we age, our skin becomes less elastic and loosens, which can cause folds and bagginess in the skin around the upper and lower eyelids. In addition, these baggy areas can appear swollen and puffy leaving individuals looking tired or prematurely aged. Some people find that the folds and bagginess hang over their eyelashes and can impair their vision.

Genetics do play a role in this too, and some individuals notice a change in the appearance of their eyelids during early adulthood, and often one or both of their parents experienced something similar. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can be performed to correct this problem at any age.

Blepharoplasty procedure can be performed just to the upper, or lower or both eyelids, depending on your individual needs and preferences. Dr. Tregaskiss can help you make this decision with the knowledge from his clinical experience.

The procedure involves removing excess skin, removing or tightening some of the surrounding muscle, and either removing or repositioning some of the fat in the area to create a beautifully lifted and youthful eyelid that will make you appear refreshed and bright-eyed.

Dr. Tregaskiss will spend time with you to help understand your goals, answer all your questions and make recommendations.

Blepharoplasty FAQs

  • 1What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. This surgery is often performed to enhance the appearance of the eyes by reducing droopiness, puffiness, and sagging, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed look.

  • 2Who is a good candidate for blepharoplasty?

A good candidate for blepharoplasty is someone experiencing sagging or drooping eyelids, puffiness, or bags under the eyes that negatively impact their appearance or vision. Candidates should be in good general health, have realistic expectations, and preferably be non-smokers.

  • 3What is the recovery time for blepharoplasty?

The initial recovery period for blepharoplasty is typically one to two weeks, during which time swelling and bruising will gradually subside. Full recovery, including the fading of scars, can take up to six weeks. Patients are advised to follow post-operative care instructions to ensure optimal healing.

  • 4Will blepharoplasty remove dark circles under the eyes?

Blepharoplasty can reduce the appearance of dark circles if they are caused by excess fat or skin beneath the eyes. However, if dark circles are due to pigmentation or thin skin, additional treatments like laser therapy, microneedling, or chemical peels may be necessary for more effective results.

  • 5Are the results of blepharoplasty permanent?

The results of blepharoplasty are long-lasting, but not entirely permanent, as the natural aging process will continue to affect the skin and surrounding tissues over time. Nevertheless, most patients enjoy significant improvements that last for many years.

  • 6What are the risks associated with blepharoplasty?

As with any surgical procedure, blepharoplasty carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, dry eyes, and temporary blurred vision. In rare cases, patients may experience asymmetry, difficulty closing the eyes, or the need for revision surgery. Choosing an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon like Dr Tregaskiss significantly reduces these risks.

  • 7Can blepharoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes, blepharoplasty is often combined with other facial cosmetic procedures, such as a facelift, brow lift, or non-surgical treatments like Botox or fillers, to achieve more comprehensive rejuvenation. Combining procedures can provide more dramatic and harmonious results.

  • 8Will I need anesthesia for blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the surgery and the patient’s preference. Your surgeon will discuss the best option for you during your consultation.

  • 9How long do the results of blepharoplasty last?

While the improvements from blepharoplasty are long-lasting, they are not immune to the effects of aging. Many patients find that their results endure for 10 to 15 years or longer, especially when maintaining a healthy lifestyle and good skincare regimen.

  • 10What should I avoid after blepharoplasty?

After blepharoplasty, it’s essential to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and bending over for at least one to two weeks to minimize swelling and bruising. You should also protect your eyes from sun exposure by wearing sunglasses and applying sunscreen around the eyes. Additionally, avoid rubbing your eyes or wearing contact lenses until your surgeon gives you clearance.
