The Botox Lip Flip is an innovative technique which creates the appearance of larger lips. It differs significantly from the conventional lip fillers as the Botox Lip Flip creates fuller lips by modifying the natural contour of the top lip without adding volume.

Botox (and other toxins) is a neuromodulator that is composed of Botulinum toxin type A. This toxin can disrupt nerve signals to muscles at or near the injection site

For the Botox lip flip, Botox is injected to the area just outside the lips, which causes the muscles of the lips to relax. This in turn leads to a “flip” of the lip that curves the upper lip upward and the lower lip downward, providing a more voluptuous smile without adding extra volume. The Botox lip flip primarily affects the orbicularis oris muscle, which is the muscle that surrounds the lips. By relaxing this muscle, the Botox lip flip procedure can create the effect of fuller lips without any downtime.

The lip flip is a fantastic alternative to lip fillers because it creates a more subtle result and does not enlarge the shape of your lips. It may look more natural than other treatments such as fillers, but it will not last as long.

What Causes a Gummy Smile?

Here are some common causes of a gummy smile:

  • Long or enlarged gum tissue, known as gingival hypertrophy, can result in a gummy smile.
  • Excessive growth of the upper jaw, known as vertical maxillary excess, can expose more gum tissue. This is a genetic pre-disposition.
  • A short or hyperactive upper lip can create an appearance of gums that are larger than usual.
  • The size and shape of the teeth can result in a gummy smile. More gum tissue will be exposed if teeth appear to be small or hidden.

How Does Botox Work for a Gummy Smile?

A gummy smile can easily and effectively be treated with Botox. Botox is botulinum toxin type A, and when injected, it relaxes the muscles in the upper lip and reduces the rise of the upper lip when smiling, so the gums will remain covered. The Botox prevents the muscles from contracting and elevating the upper lip when smiling. Two or more units of Botox are injected in the area between the nose and upper lip to reduce the appearance of any “gummy” smile, creating a more appealing and natural smile.

This minimally invasive treatment is wonderfully effective. You can expect to see results within 1-2 weeks of your treatment and the results usually last 3 months.
