It is a normal part of healing for the body to form a capsule of tissue around a foreign body. When this scar tissue tightens it is known as capsular contracture. The tightening of this scar tissue can sometimes cause pain and for the breast to appear misshapen.
Breast exercises, or massage, help to prevent capsular contractures by encouraging the breast tissue to remain more pliable.
The exercises should be performed 3 times daily for the first 6 months, twice daily for the next 6 months. Each breast should be pushed gently and held in position of a few seconds before release.
