What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that is designed to increase breast size with the use of saline breast implants or silicone breast implants (silicone gel implants). The breast implant procedure can help restore the volume in your breasts after weight loss or pregnancy.

Common reasons patients choose breast augmentation include:

  • Volume loss after weight changes or pregnancy
  • Breast asymmetry (one breast bigger than the other)
  • Wanting fuller breasts

Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Ideal candidates to undergo breast augmentation are typically looking to increase the size and shape of their breasts. We also recommend:

  • Be in good overall health
  • Have realistic expectations of the procedure
  • Be a nonsmoker
  • You do not have any medical conditions that could negatively affect the healing process

Dr. Tregaskiss will walk you through your consultation to assess your candidacy and help you feel informed.

What to Expect: The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Your breast augmentation surgery will start with the administration of general anesthesia. Then,  Dr. Tregaskiss will make an incision along the breast crease, around the nipple, or under the arm. He will make a pocket in the breast (either above or below the chest muscle and breast tissue) and place the silicone implant or saline implant inside. Once both implants are in place, he will close the incision, and you’ll be ready to start the recovery process.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

To start your breast surgery recovery, you’ll likely have some bruising, swelling, and tenderness, but these will subside as you heal. Your breasts will be wrapped in dressings and will be given a surgical bra to support the breasts and reduce swelling. Dr. Tregaskiss will give you detailed instructions on how to take care of your incisions and limit any scar tissue. He will also prescribe pain medication to ensure you’re comfortable throughout your healing process. You will need someone to drive you home after your surgery.

At the start of your recovery, you’ll want to rest as much as possible and limit any strenuous activities.

We recommend:

  • Taking 3–5 days off work to rest and recover
  • Sleeping on your back
  • Avoiding strenuous activity for 2–3 weeks
  • Avoiding heavy lifting for at least six weeks

Most swelling and bruising will have subsided after a few weeks, and your new improvements with your new saline or silicone implants will be more visible. As you recover, you will also want to attend all your follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth recovery.

You will also want to continue with regular breast cancer screenings. Simply let your technician know before they perform the screening.
