Irish woman warns of the harm of “surgery tourism” after she loses a breast

January 30, 2020

A Belfast woman is warning others of the harms of travelling abroad for surgery after contracting an infection following breast surgery in Turkey. When the infection worsened it caused so much tissue damage that surgeons back in Ireland had to perform a mastectomy.

While there is always a risk of infection from any surgery, ensuring your surgery is performed in a reputable facility and undertaken by highly skilled and certified staff is the best thing you can do to minimize this risk. It is always important to also consider what aftercare is in place for complications after surgery. Be sure to discuss what will happen if you have any complications with your Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon before any surgery to ensure you are fully informed.
